Why can’t the Saudis defeat the Houthis?

Saudi Arabia spends almost ten times Yemen’s total GDP on its military. But despite being considerably weaker financially, Yemen’s Houthis are gaining ground against their internationally supported rivals.

Yemen‘s Houthis are making gains against Saudi Arabia, which has one of the world’s best-funded militaries. The Houthis have recently captured territory from the internationally recognized Yemeni government and are striking Saudi infrastructure.

Experts say the Houthis have long prepared for this conflict and will keep fighting to gain leverage in future negotiations. The US is cautious about getting enmeshed in another Middle East conflict.
