The son of detained Zambian opposition politician Bishop Trevor Mwamba has told the BBC he is concerned for his father’s safety after the former Bishop of Botswana was detained along with 10 other opposition figures by authorities.
Eno Mwamba said his father, who is leader of the United National Independence Party, has been charged with treason following President Hakainde Hichilema’s disputed election victory.
The opposition politicians have been held since a raid by security forces on 14 August.
Opposition leader Brian Mundubile, head of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP), had gone into hiding after disputing the election result, but has since also been detained by the authorities.
The government accuses the opposition of planning an armed insurgency and have charged the detained politicians with treason. They have denied the charges.
