Lebanon offensive dialled back after Trump-Netanyahu call

Residents of Beirut welcomed the easing of Israel’s strikes on the Lebanese capital, which followed a reportedly heated phone call between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump.

Just hours after US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to scale back fighting, Israel carried out strikes on targets in southern Lebanon, killing several people.

Residents in Beirut, however, voiced relief as Israel withdrew plans to intensify strikes on the Lebanese capital. 

The truce in Lebanon is seen as pivotal to protracted Iran-US peace talks top of Donald Trump’s agenda.
