Paris is considered the heart of Europe’s ballroom scene, a community created by Black, queer and Latino people seeking acceptance and belonging. Performer Hanabi shares how ballroom has become a safe space where he can express his identity as a Black queer man despite experiencing racism and discrimination in France.

From voguing and fashion to chosen families known as “houses,” the Paris ballroom scene offers support, visibility and community. For many participants, ballroom is more than competition. It is a place to celebrate identity, build connections and find a sense of home.
