The Mediterranean Spanish island of Ibiza, known worldwide as an electronic music epicenter, attracts more than three million visitors each year – a huge number for an island with about 160,000 residents. As in many parts of Spain, these crowds of tourists are viewed with increasing skepticism. Most visit Ibiza for the clubs. The island owes its status as a party mecca to the hippie culture of the 1960s. But a lot has changed since then. Today, high prices dominate daily life. This has become a major problem for locals who face unaffordable and rising rents. The local tourist board now wants to reinvent Ibiza’s image. While retaining its nightlife, the island is aiming to attract a broader market with a greater focus on outdoor sports, cultural events, and family-friendly activities.
