Manuela Schwesig, the Social Democratic premier of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is campaigning to stop the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) from securing another major victory in eastern Germany.
The longtime state leader is focusing on jobs, education, family support and social cohesion, while warning that the AfD’s anti-immigration rhetoric is deepening social divisions and hostility toward minorities and women.
Despite criticism over her past backing of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Schwesig remains one of the state’s most popular politicians as she seeks to turn personal support into votes.
