The election of an AfD lawmaker as parliamentary speaker in Germany’s eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt has sparked a political backlash. Tobias Rausch became the first far-right politician since World War II to lead a state legislature, calling for an end to the political “firewall” that isolates the Alternative for Germany (AfD). Protesters gathered outside parliament. Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the vote, saying anyone backing the AfD was aiding extremism. Germany’s domestic intelligence agency classifies the AfD branch in Saxony-Anhalt as right-wing extremist.
