Hungary’s public broadcaster is undergoing a historic transformation after years of being accused of serving as a mouthpiece and propaganda platform for Viktor Orban’s government.

Following the April election victory of Peter Magyar and his TISZA party, news broadcasts were temporarily suspended while the public broadcaster began an overhaul aimed at restoring credibility and editorial independence.

Among those returning is journalist Rita Benyo, who left public media during the Orban years.

“For a long time, as a news journalist, I wasn’t actually allowed to report the news,” she told DW.

The reforms have not been without controversy, but supporters argue that rebuilding trust after 16 years of political influence will take time.
