Germany has 350 officially recognized spa towns, many of which begin with the word “Bad”, the German word for spa. One example is Baden-Baden, one of UNESCO’s Great Spa Towns of Europe. An official spa town must offer natural healing resources such as thermal waters, as well as infrastructure dedicated to health and relaxation, including parks, clinics, and cultural facilities. Baden-Baden is home to two major bathhouses: the modern Caracalla Spa, built in the 1980s, and the historic Friedrichsbad. Friedrichsbad was built in 1877 in an elegant Neo-Renaissance style featuring vaulted ceilings and marble arches. Those visiting the spa follow a Roman-Irish bathing ritual, a multi-stage experience of steam baths, pools, massages, and cold plunges designed to warm the body, stimulate circulation, and leave visitors feeling refreshed.
