Venezuela quake death toll surges amid rescue efforts

Acting President Delcy Rodriguez has put the number of fatalities at 589 dead and about 3,000 injured. Meanwhile, rescuers are using their bare hands as well as heavy machinery to find survivors and victims in the rubble.

Rescue teams are searching for survivors after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela near the capital, Caracas, on Wednesday, killing hundreds and leaving thousands injured or missing.

The magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 quakes, seconds apart, caused widespread destruction and dozens of aftershocks.

Survivors have been pulled from collapsed buildings as international aid arrives.

Authorities have said the disaster is overwhelming emergency services, warning that rescue efforts are ongoing and recovery will take time.
