Poland has some of the most restrictive abortion laws in Europe. Nevertheless, activists there are finding new ways to help women who seek an abortion.
The “Abortomat,” a parcel locker that dispenses abortion pills, is part of a grassroots support network that offers medical guidance and a safe space for women who want to end a pregnancy.
The activists face almost daily protests and the threat of criminal charges.
Poland’s parliament on Tuesday voted to liberalize abortion laws, partially decriminalizing the termination of a pregnancy and decriminalizing assisting abortion. The two bills could, however, still be vetoed by the president.
Whatever happens, activists say the reforms do little to address the realities of abortion care in Poland and say they will continue to build their own support system.
