Nairobi is racing to prepare for another season of heavy rains as forecasts point to a powerful El Nino bringing more extreme weather to East Africa. After deadly floods in recent years, the capital of Kenya is upgrading drainage systems, restoring rivers and clearing floodplains to reduce the risk. The project includes widening river channels and building new sewer lines. Though many residents welcome the improvements, some have been displaced. Climate scientists warn that rainfall could become more intense and unpredictable as warming Pacific Ocean temperatures influence weather patterns across the region.
