Five years after catastrophic floods devastated Germany’s Ahr Valley, killing 135 people and destroying thousands of homes, many residents are still living with the disaster’s emotional impact. While reconstruction has transformed much of the region, trauma, anxiety, and financial worries remain widespread. Local support groups and memorial projects are helping communities cope, even as experts warn against ‘flood amnesia’ and remind residents that the risk of future flooding has not disappeared.
