Plans for a luxury resort development backed by Jared Kushner on Albania‘s southern coast have become a flashpoint in a broader debate about foreign investment, political influence and environmental protection.
The proposed multi-billion-dollar project would transform a protected coastal area into a luxury tourism destination with thousands of hotel rooms. For Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, the development represents an opportunity to attract foreign investment, boost economic growth and raise the country’s international profile.
But critics argue that the deal goes far beyond a conventional real estate project. Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, is seen as a figure whose business interests are closely intertwined with political influence in Washington.
The development has alsodrawn scrutiny because of its environmental impact. Opponents warn that the project could threaten a protected ecosystem that is home to flamingos, seals and sea turtles.
