Here is what NTSB chair Jennifer Homendy said during her press conference:
- Flight 7598 Amazon Air had two crew members on board and was arriving from Puerto Rico on Sunday
- The plane hit a white Ford van owned by a contract cleaning company which had seven people inside
- It then went through the perimeter fence and collided with a Toyota Corolla which was travelling on 67th Avenue and ended up 1,300ft (396m) past the runway
- Investigators arrived on scene at 18:00 local time on Sunday and are still there
- The flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder have been recovered – though the recovery of victims’ bodies is the priority of the NTSB
- The investigation will look at the system known as EMAS – which is placed at the end of a runway to reduce the impact of an overrun aircraft – and the relationship between Amazon and 21 Air – the company contracted to transport the cargo
- “Devastating” was Homendy’s answer when asked to describe the scene – “It’s hard to see, and I’m sure very difficult for the first responders as well”
