Anthropic’s Mythos, Fable blocked after US bans foreign use

The US government has imposed an export ban on Anthropic’s AI models Mythos 5 and Fable 5, citing national security concerns. The move marks another clash between the company and the Trump administration.

Anthropic introduced Fable 5 after calling its original AI model, Mythos 5, “too dangerous” for ordinary customers. Now, both versions have been cut off following the Trump administration’s ban on access for non-US citizens.

This is the second time that the San Francisco-based firm has clashed with the US government over the use of the technology, after the company criticized its deployment during the Iran war.

We ask veteran security and AI researcher Gary McGraw whether the suspension is based on real security concerns or a PR stunt that backfired, and the growing tensions between tech firms and governments over control of powerful AI systems.
