Apple brings touch to the Mac, reversing years-old stance on touchscreen laptop

Apple announces a new touchscreen laptop, the company’s third major launch under new CEO John Ternus.

  • The launch signifies the growing strategic importance of the Mac to Apple, despite it generating less revenue than the iPhone.
  • The move comes as global PC shipments fall and Apple faces pressure from rising memory costs and higher computer prices.
  • Touchscreens have not typically driven laptop purchases, making Apple’s software changes and developer strategy central to whether the feature catches on.

Apple on Wednesday released its first laptop with a touch screen, which it is calling MacBook Pro with ProLED XDR Display.

Apple said that the laptop has a new display, using OLED technology, that offers more brightness, better colors and wider viewing angles. It’s using Apple’s M5 Pro or Max chips, and Apple said on Wednesday that it’s lighter than Apple’s current pro laptops.

It’s still an Apple laptop, and is running MacOS, not a version of the iPhone or iPad operating system. In a video, Apple showed users swiping on the screen to manipulate videos or images. It also has a glowing Apple logo on the laptop’s lid.

The new laptop will go on sale on Nov. 6 and the 14-inch version will start at $2,899. The 16-inch version will cost at least $3,399. Both are notable price increases from existing models.

This is Apple’s third major product launch under new CEO John Ternus, signaling a faster cadence for hardware releases. It’s also a major reversal for Apple, which has resisted putting touchscreens on its laptops for decades as some Windows machines gained the feature.

“Yes, for the very first time, we are bringing touch to the Mac,” Ternus said in live remarks to media and analysts in Los Angeles.

The new MacBook Pro comes at a time when the laptop market has been going through one of its worst slumps ever. Overall shipments are expected to be down 11% this year. Analysts say the AI-driven global market shortage of memory has contributed to higher laptop prices, which has hurt sales and demand.

In the third quarter, total PC shipments dropped 20% on a year-over-year basis, according to market researcher IDC. Apple’s own shipments fell 11% during the quarter, according to the estimate.

Even Apple’s not immune to rising memory prices, after former CEO Tim Cook warned this summer that the situation around memory prices was “unsustainable.” Nearly all Macs got price hikes this year. Mac Minis introduced in August got a $300 bump, for example.

The announcement caps a busy two months of product launches under Ternus.

Apple also introduced new iMac and MacBook Pro models with M6 chips this week, after price hikes to the lineup totaling several hundred dollars in June. Apple introduced an iPad Mini on Monday that starts at $699, $100 more than its predecessor.

In September, Apple released new iPhones, including its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo. It also revealed a new smart speaker with a display called HomeView that uses a redesigned version of Siri to answer a broader range of questions.

The launch signifies the growing strategic importance of the Mac to Apple, despite it generating less revenue than the iPhone. In the most recent quarter, Apple reported $10.35 billion in Mac sales, or just under 10% of the company’s total revenue.

But many software developers swear by the Mac, and it remains the only supported platform to develop iPhone apps. And in recent months, Apple has highlighted its chips and memory architecture to make the case that its computers are the best fit for local or edge AI that runs on a device, instead of the cloud.

Meta’s AI model developer team bought hundreds of Mac Minis this year to test agents, for example. And Apple notably teamed up with Meta earlier this month to make an announcement that large, nearly frontier models can run on clusters of Macs connected with high-speed cabling, allowing developers to run agentic code without paying Anthropic or OpenAI.

Apple has had a historical resistance to touchscreen laptops — software chief Craig Federighi explained in 2018 that the ergonomics would fatigue users. “We make the world’s best touch computer on an iPad. It’s totally optimized for that. And the Mac is totally optimized for indirect input. We haven’t really felt a reason to change that,” Ternus, then Apple’s senior VP of hardware engineering, told The Wall Street Journal’s Joanna Stern in 2021.

Ternus has been working on Macs since he joined the company and was credited along with silicon chief Johny Srouji as the leader of Apple’s effort to get Macs running on Apple’s chips, not Intel’s. Apple credited Ternus’ work on Mac in its official CEO transition statement.

That may be why Ternus in his early days as CEO will be the executive to backtrack on a long-running Apple design philosophy.

Touchscreen laptops have been available on Windows machines for a long time, but they’re just another feature, not a selling point behind most purchasing decisions, Ryan Reith, IDC VP for worldwide device trackers, said.

Only 17% of notebook PCs shipped globally this year will have touchscreens, according to IDC data. Touchscreen laptops also have a slightly lower average selling price than non-touchscreen notebooks.

Hardware technology hasn’t been the limiting factor for Apple merging its desktop and mobile interfaces, he added, and Apple could have been waiting to launch a touchscreen laptop until it could present a good user experience and perfect its software after attempts to make its iPad more like a laptop.

“This is really a user interface and software thing,” Reith said. “It’s one more thing that can draw the developers in.”
