Breastfeeding: Natural, but not always easy

For many new parents, breastfeeding is expected to come naturally. But for a surprising number of mothers and babies, it doesn’t. Pain, latching difficulties, worries about milk supply, and the feeling that everyone else seems to have it figured out can make the first weeks overwhelming. As lactation consultant Christiane Stange puts it: breastfeeding is a bit like dancing. Mother and baby have to learn the steps together.

Many problems are solvable

One of the biggest misconceptions? That pain is simply part of breastfeeding. It often signals a problem that can be addressed, whether through a better latch, a different feeding position, skin-to-skin contact, or support from a lactation consultant. Yet many parents never receive the guidance they need, even though timely support can make the difference between continuing and stopping.

Why human milk matters

Human milk offers more than nutrition. For premature babies in particular, it can help protect against serious infections. That’s why hospitals like Berlin’s Charité operate human milk banks and provide donated milk to vulnerable infants.

Breastfeeding can take time, patience and practice. Struggling doesn’t mean you’re failing. For many families, the right support can make all the difference.
