Anti-immigrant marches in South Africa are fueling fear among foreign nationals, as protesters demand migrants leave under the slogan “abahambe,” which means “let them go” in Zulu.
While marchers say they are targeting undocumented migrants, many legal residents have reported threats, violence and lost livelihoods.
Thousands, including about 10,000 Malawians, have fled to temporary shelters in dire conditions, fearing attacks if they return home.
Migrants from Ghana, Nigeria and elsewhere say they are being targeted regardless of status. Several governments have evacuated their citizens.
Despite a condemnation of xenophobia by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the crisis is raising urgent questions about safety, belonging and the future of African unity.
