Tony Romo, the former star quarterback for the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, has been arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, police said.

Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said Romo was pulled over around 18:00 local time (23:00 GMT) in Wisconsin on Thursday, and was arrested after he performed poorly on field sobriety tests.

He was released later that night and ordered to appear in court on 21 September.

Romo now works as a football commentator for broadcaster CBS, which has not commented on his arrest.

According to local media, it is his first offence related to operating a vehicle while intoxicated. If found guilty, he could have his driver’s licence suspended and be required to pay a fine.

Romo played for the Cowboys from 2003 to 2016, passing to score 248 touchdowns in his career. He is also known for dating singer Jessica Simpson from 2007 to 2009.

He is originally from the city of Burlington, Wisconsin, 30 miles (48km) southwest of Milwaukee.

Since 2017, he has worked as a game analyst for CBS. In 2011, he married model Candice Crawford, and the couple have three children.
