Wildfires are burning across large parts of southern Europe, with major blazes reported in Spain, France and Italy.

In Spain, hundreds of firefighters battled fires that forced evacuations near Madrid and in Castilla y Leon. In southwestern France, more than 10,000 people were evacuated as flames spread through coastal forest near Bordeaux. In Sicily, thousands of firefighters and emergency workers fought dozens of fires threatening homes, businesses and farmland.

Authorities say extreme heat and strong winds have intensified the crisis, while residents describe fear, destruction and heavy losses.
