Democrat James Talarico won a US Senate seat in Texas on Tuesday, defeating Republican Ken Paxton and delivering Democrats their first statewide victory in more than three decades.
The upset shook a longtime Republican stronghold that President Donald Trump had carried comfortably just two years earlier.
Supporters erupted in cheers at Talarico’s election-nightgathering in downtown Austin when the race was called.
