The man accused of assassinating a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband in a targeted act of political violence last year has pleaded guilty as part of a deal that spares him from facing the death penalty, US media report.

Vance Boelter admitted he shot and killed state Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, at their Minnesota home last June. Fellow state lawmaker John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, were also allegedly shot by Boelter in their home, but the couple survived the attack.

Boetler pleaded guilty to six counts, which include murder and stalking, under the agreement.

Prosecutors are asking for two life sentences plus 40 years, local news outlets reported.

The guilty plea comes after the US Attorney’s Office said it would not seek the death penalty in the case.

The deal reflects an agreement on federal charges; the state of Minnesota still has to resolve its case against him, state officials said.
