A man charged with the murder of a woman in County Galway in the Republic of Ireland has been found dead in his prison cell.

The body of 35-year-old Ali Sohrabi was discovered on Thursday morning, Irish broadcaster RTÉ reports.

Foul play is not suspected.

He had been remanded in custody after he was charged with the murder of Masumeh Manojan, a woman in her 30s originally from Iran.

Her body was found on the outskirts of Clifden last month near an International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) centre – a unit which houses people seeking asylum in the Republic of Ireland.

In a statement the Irish Prison Service confirmed that there was a death of a person in custody at Castlerea Prison on 25 June.

It added that all deaths in custody are investigated by the Irish Prison Service, the Inspector of Prisons and An Garda Síochána (Irish police), where circumstances warrant.
