Ukraine launched what Russian authorities described as the largest drone attack of the war against Moscow and its surrounding region, striking critical infrastructure including the Russian capital’s largest oil refinery on the final day of parliamentary elections. The attack highlights Kyiv’s continuing strategy of targeting Russia’s energy sector while bringing the war deeper into Russian territory.
Russia analyst Jenny Mathers of Aberystwyth University told DW attacks on Moscow have significance far beyond their immediate military impact. “Strikes in Moscow city and Moscow region at any time are a major symbol of Ukrainian military expertise and military might,” Mathers said. “On an election day, it’s an additional signal that the Ukrainians are sending to the Russians.”
