Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports in the Odesa region have drastically reduced Ukraine’s options for maritime exports.
To create an alternative route, the Republic of Moldova has halved tariffs for the rail transit of Ukrainian goods (including grain) through the country until the end of 2026.
Chisinau hopes the move will attract approximately 10% of Ukraine’s agricultural exports and increase Moldovan Railways’ revenues, which saw a 22% drop in the volume of goods transported last year.
Some Moldovan farmers, however, are worried.
Sergiu Spinei, a farmer from Delacau, says local producers are already facing losses caused by a harsh winter, higher costs and low water levels on the Danube. They fear that cheaper Ukrainian wheat will put additional pressure on the local market.
