A coastal community in Nigeria is on the front line of the climate crisis. In Ayetoro, rising sea levels and powerful ocean surges have submerged land, destroyed family homes and flooded more than 300 houses since 2018.
The region loses an average of 7 meters (23 feet) of coastline each year, forcing some residents to relocate while others remain at risk.
Experts say global warming is driving sea-level rise worldwide, increasing the threat of coastal flooding and erosion. They warn that stronger adaptation measures and lower greenhouse-gas emissions are needed to limit future damage.
