Fifty years after the 1976 Soweto uprising, where police killed students protesting apartheid education policies, hundreds retraced their steps to honor the dead and demand change.

Survivors recall the violence that left 176 dead and sparked nationwide unrest.

Today’s youth face mass unemployment and inequality, with many questioning the value of education without jobs. Activists warn frustration is rising, echoing the unrest of the past.
