The physics trick that could halve energy use of AC

A new technology uses shape-memory metals that heat up when stretched and cool down when released. This cooling effect would make refrigerators and air conditioners much more efficient.

Researchers at Saarland University are developing a radically different approach to cooling. Their system relies on the elastocaloric effect, in which nickel-titanium wires heat up when stretched and cool down when released. Early prototypes suggest that the technology could use about half as much electricity as conventional systems. If successful, it could one day help make refrigerators, air conditioners and heat pumps far more energy-efficient.
