Its top line growth rate is set to rise to at least 8% on the back of a record $11.1 billion project backlog and major supply agreements near semiconductor fabs. Linde has a defensive “take-or-pay” moat. About 30% of its gas revenue is sourced from on-site facilities that are shielded from macro cyclicality and inflation by 15- to 20-year contracts that enforce baseline take-or-pay guarantees and benefit from energy cost pass-throughs. Operating margins are expanding toward 31% via fixed infrastructure leverage, which, combined with steady share buybacks, is projected to compound adjusted EPS growth at 13% to 14% annually. While chipmakers and data centers receive headline attention, industrial gas suppliers are also essential to the AI boom. Fabrication of advanced artificial intelligence chips and high bandwidth memory requires continuous, high-volume flows of ultra-high purity gases, such as nitrogen, argon, and helium, for lithography, chemical vapor deposition, and wafer purging. This means Linde , the world’s largest industrial gas company, is entering a growth acceleration phase, fueled by multi-decade “take-or-pay” contracts to support AI-related manufacturing that will help expand Linde’s market share and improve its margins. With deep exposure to high-tech manufacturing, clean energy and industrial manufacturing, Linde can double its consolidated revenue growth rate to 8% over the next three to four years. The step-up will be driven by new industrial gas plants built inside or next to massive new AI semiconductor fabs. Linde’s investment thesis rests on three core secular catalysts: market share expansion in advanced electronics driven by the need for critical gas supply to AI fabs; multibillion-dollar clean energy and carbon capture infrastructure opportunities; and margin expansion through fixed-asset operating leverage. These growth engines are anchored by long-term contracts that lock in predictable, high-return cash flows that provide a measure of insulation from broader economic volatility. About 30% of its business has the added protection of automatic energy cost pass-through provisions. Linde shares have fallen more than 3% over the past year, creating an attractive entry point that doesn’t reflect the near-term improvement in its performance. Despite accelerating growth, expanding margins, and aggressive share repurchases, Linde trades at an enterprise value to EBITDA of about 17.6x, about in line with its 10-year historical median of 17.5x. The stock, which closed Monday at $464.41, has a fair value target based on 2027 figures of $580, implying about 25% upside. Essential infrastructure at protected prices Linde is geographically diversified with operations spanning the Americas, Europe and Asia, supported by a specialized global engineering division. Onsite revenue is generated by long-term, utility-style supply contracts, while its merchant operations distribute smaller quantities of gases to customers by truck and even smaller quantities via packaged cylinders. The company serves critical, nondiscretionary sectors including electronics, healthcare, manufacturing, chemicals and refining. It operates within an industrial gas oligopoly, competing globally with Air Liquide and Air Products . According to the Japan Times, these three companies have a combined global market share of approximately 70%. The Americas remains Linde’s largest regional engine, generating approximately 45% of total sales. The majority of its business benefits from extraordinary structural characteristics, including multi-decade contracts that lock-in payments for gases it produces or is supported by what amounts to a localized monopoly around production hubs. An unshakable moat The industrial gas ecosystem is driven by broad secular trends, including the reshoring of manufacturing, advanced semiconductor nodes and carbon capture infrastructure. These key trends are supported by a massive wave of domestic capital expenditures in the U.S. and East Asia to support and secure the supply chains for next-generation data centers and AI technology. Linde is competitively advantaged due to its geographic density, infrastructure scale and intellectual property tied to the manufacture high purity industrial gases. Its distribution network also forms an impressive moat. Once a pipeline or on-site production facility is integrated into a customer’s multibillion-dollar manufacturing complex, the client is contractually and physically locked in for 15 to 20 years. Relative to its nearest peers, Linde demonstrates superior operating efficiency, superior pricing power, and an industry-leading adjusted operating profit margin approaching 30%. The investment community routinely values Linde as an old economy commodity supplier. In reality, it functions as a primary, nondiscretionary gatekeeper to the AI computing revolution. Advanced logic and AI chip production require immense, continuous flows of ultra-high-purity nitrogen, oxygen and argon for lithography and wafer purging. Linde’s electronics end market, 10% of revenue, is already flashing signs of a strong breakout, surging 18% year-over-year and 7% sequentially, as of the second quarter . Linde is securing the lion’s share of new contracts. It’s gaining market share by winning exclusive positions in multibillion dollar domestic mega-fabs. For example, Linde committed $1 billion to build , own and operate two new air separation units to supply ultra-high purity gases under long term take or pay agreements for Taiwan Semiconductor’s expansion in Arizona . Linde’s backlog is growing as a result. Its sale-of-gas backlog has hit a record $8.1 billion within a total project and engineering backlog of $11.1 billion. As these projects commission over the next 24 to 36 months, they will systematically push consolidated revenue growth toward 8%. Earnings quality is pristine Because Linde’s infrastructure network is fixed, newly added volumes drop to the bottom line with minimal incremental cost. Even better, their raw material, air, is free. These factors give Linde operating leverage and fuel positive margin trends. Operating margin trends have continuously scaled upward from around 24% after its 2018 merger with Praxair to a near-record 29.5% in the second quarter. As ultra-high-margin electronics contracts scale, the mix shift naturally will pull operating margins above 31%, further improving the corporate earnings flywheel. Over the last several years, profits have scaled at a remarkable clip. Adjusted earnings per share climbed from $12.29 in 2022 to $16.46 in 2025. Impressively, the growth occurred during a period when revenue appeared flat due to normalizing post-pandemic energy pass-through adjustments. If Linde’s earnings are growing this robustly while revenue barely grew, investors should be excited by the prospect of revenue acceleration over the next few years. Meanwhile, cash flow from operations reached $10.35 billion in 2025, showcasing impressive free cash flow conversion. In the first half of 2026, Linde returned $3.1 billion to shareholders, including $1.4 billion in dividends and $1.7 billion in net share buybacks. The cash generation is driven by negative working capital dynamics, recurring utility billings, and minimal asset obsolescence. The balance sheet remains strong as well. While total debt stands around $26 billion to $28 billion to fund the historic capital expenditure expansion, the net leverage ratio is comfortably supported by highly defensive, contractually guaranteed cash flows. Linde currently trades at about 26.7 times trailing 12-month non-GAAP earnings and an EV/EBITDA of about 17.6 times. This valuation compares favorably with traditional high-moat tech infrastructure players, while trading at a justifiable premium to legacy commodity peers due to its structurally superior cash conversion, contract protections, and high return on invested capital. Asset start-up announcements, as more than 20 major projects in the backlog go live, are among the upcoming catalysts investors should anticipate. Mega-scale contract wins, which include announcements matching the scope of the recent $1 billion Phoenix semiconductor complex, should help boost the stock and cement Linde’s market share dominance. Bottom line Bears may argue that Linde is deeply vulnerable to a cyclical downturn in traditional industrial production, or that escalating debt used to build out its backlog will restrict capital returns. In fact, these concerns are greatly mitigated by the company’s contract terms. Legacy volume drops are heavily buffered by baseline take-or-pay cash guarantees. Furthermore, energy cost fluctuations pass entirely to the end user. These factors help protect Linde’s cash generation, which remains highly insulated from inflationary spikes. In summary, Linde represents a rare and highly attractive opportunity to invest in the hardware backbone of AI at a standard defensive valuation. The company seamlessly combines a localized infrastructure monopoly, strong upward margin trends, market share gains and a dedicated share retirement strategy. While macro headwinds persist in legacy industrial sectors, the current stock price underappreciates the visible, contractually secured durability of Linde’s earnings power over the next several years.
