More than 1,500 couples have taken part in a state-sponsored mass wedding in Nigeria’s Kano state, where authorities say the initiative helps low-income families afford marriage costs and promotes social stability. Couples received financial support, household items and counseling as part of the program. While many welcomed the assistance, critics questioned the public spending and pointed to the event’s political overtones ahead of next year’s elections, with campaign symbols visible during the celebrations.
Kano, which adopted a Sharia criminal and civil code in 2000, is one of Nigeria’s northern states where a man can take more than one wife. Some of the grooms in attendance married their second wife at the mass event.
