Republicans are struggling to explain a bruising midterm election defeat that handed Democrats control of both chambers of Congress.

President Donald Trump argued that Republican candidates failed to convert his popularity into votes; Vice President JD Vance said the Iran war was the main reason for the loss.

Trump acknowledged that the conflict contributed to rising fuel prices, which may have hurt the party.

Republicans in states such as Texas also pointed to voter concerns over the cost of living. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis blamed the Trump administration for the nationwide setback.
