Nearly nine months after a Gaza ceasefire was declared, US President Donald Trump says a new agreement has been reached to secure the complete disarmament of Hamas, followed by an Israeli military withdrawal.

Hamas officials say they would transfer their weapons to a technocratic governing body if Israel ends hostilities and leaves Gaza.

But deep mistrust remains among Israelis and Palestinians, while violence continues in the territory, raising doubts about whether the latest peace initiative can bring a lasting end to the conflict.
