Heavy smoke from hundreds of Canadian wildfires has spread across large parts of the United States, shrouding cities including Washington, Chicago, New York and Detroit and triggering health warnings over poor air quality.

Residents have reported breathing difficulties and reduced visibility.

As nearly 950 fires burn across Canada, many out of control, US President Donald Trump has threatened Ottawa with new tariffs over the cross-border smoke.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has rejected the criticism, calling instead for greater cooperation and support in fighting the fires.
