Days after the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington DC was refilled with water after undergoing renovations, algae has appeared.

The Trump Administration awarded a no-bid contract of more than $13 million to renovate the pool, which included painting the bottom of the pool “American flag blue”. The president promised a “beautiful, beautiful reflecting pool” that would “stay clean”.

The Interior Department’s spokeswoman said the algae was “residual” and it came from the pipes.

The BBC spoke to tourists and locals about the algae in the pool, and the cleaning that’s being done on the site.
