The New York City Council has passed a ban on the city’s well-know horse-drawn carriages starting in June 2028, a proposal backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
While animal rights activists and officials have pushed for the ban for years, the final catalyst was the death of a 18-year-old earlier this year, who died after a carriage horse bolted and caused a fatal fall.
The BBC’s Madeline Halpert spoke New York City tourists, residents and horse carriage workers to get their perspectives on the industry and the ban.
