Trump hosted Ryder Williams at the White House after the 16-year-old lifeguard rescued 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai from a beach in California on 25 July.

The president also met Rai, who had been swept about 15 yards (13.7m) offshore when Williams reached him, with several beachgoers also joining the rescue.

The meeting came after Trump announced he would give Williams a “High Civilian Honour” for the rescue.
