Germany is polarized. That appears to be the lesson from recent state elections.
Winners in Berlin, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and Saxony-Anhalt were parties on the political fringes – the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), and the far-left Left Party.
The votes also delivered chastening results for parties in the political center, the so-called “People’s Parties.”
So, what do the results tell us about the state of German politics and where it’s going?
