Why Europe’s far right is turning away from Trump

US President Trump is losing ground with some of his closest allies abroad. The German far-right AfD, France’s Marine Le Pen and Italy’s Giorgia Meloni are keeping their distance. Why?

Far-right parties across Europe used to show off their good relations with Donald Trump and his MAGA movement. They even borrowed his slogan. It made them look important, part of a global movement.

The thinking was that it might boost their election results. Trump wanted this too. The White House openly said so in its 2025 National Security Strategy.

But halfway through Trump’s second term, this transatlantic far-right alliance seems to be cooling. The two sides appear to be drifting apart.
