Will Hungary’s new govt. bring real change on LGBTQ+ rights?

Since LGBTQ+ rights were restricted under Viktor Orban, Peter Magyar’s sweeping victory in April’s election raised hopes. But will Hungary’s political earthquake bring real change for Hungary’s LGBTQ+ community, too?

After years of restrictions on LGBTQ+ rights under former Prime Minister Viktor Orban, adoption is out of reach for same sex couples in Hungary. As a result, the only remaining legal path open to these couples is co‑parenting. 

This was the path chosen by Kriszta and Son. While not actually a couple — each of them lives with a partner of the same sex — they co-parent their child together. 

Now, as Hungary’s recently elected prime minister, Peter Magyar, signals openness and has begun talks with civil society groups, Kriszta and Son are cautiously hopeful that change will come. 

But is real change likely? Or is this just another political promise?
