In a region where the death penalty is frequently used, Lebanon has taken a stand against executions
The country’s parliament has voted to formally abolish the death penalty, becoming the first country in the Middle East to end the practice.
A majority of lawmakers backed the legislation, while the Hezbollah militant group’s parliamentary bloc opposed it.
The bill now goes to President Joseph Aoun for approval.
