Brazilians are voting in a closely watched presidential election between incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and right-wing senator Flavio Bolsonaro.

Lula is seeking a historic fourth term, campaigning on democracy, development and Brazilian sovereignty while highlighting what he sees as the stakes of the vote.

Bolsonaro, making his first presidential bid, promises lower taxes, economic growth and tougher action on crime, while promoting closer ties with the United States.

Polls suggest either candidate could win outright. If no one secures more than 50% of the vote, a runoff will be held on October 25.
