Merz pledges military and financial aid on visit to Ukraine

Merz’s visit to Kyiv is his second since becoming German chancellor last year. He made the trip despite a Russian warning to foreign nationals to leave the Ukrainian capital. “We will not be intimidated,” Merz said.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Kyiv in a show of support for Ukraine as Russia intensified attacks on the capital’s infrastructure.

Together with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he honored fallen soldiers at Kyiv’s Maidan Square while air raid sirens sounded across the city.

During the visit, Russian drones struck a bridge over the Dnipro River and damaged infrastructure.

Merz condemned Russia’s attacks on civilians and announced €350 million ($394 million) in energy support and €1 billion in military aid, including drones and satellite technology, saying Ukraine’s security is closely tied to Germany’s own.
