Israel, Lebanon and the United States have signed a trilateral framework agreement aimed at paving the way for peace after decades of conflict. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the agreement “the beginning of the beginning,” while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would maintain its so-called “security zone”” in southern Lebanon until Hezbollah is disarmed. Hezbollah has rejected key elements of the agreement, with one senior lawmaker warning that attempts to impose the deal could lead to civil war.
DW’s Ben Fajzullin speaks with Hanin Ghaddar of the Washington Institute about what the agreement means, whether it will weaken Hezbollah, and if this framework can really lead to lasting peace.
