The Israeli military has begun demolishing buildings in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron, a day after two Israeli soldiers were killed in an attack at a checkpoint.

Palestinian officials say Israel has ordered more than a thousand people to leave their homes as part of military operations, just days before Israel’s general election.

The Palestinian Authority, which governs the West Bank, has criticized Israel’s response as “collective punishment.”
