Students from Germany, Italy and Romania are working together in a village in the Romanian region of Transylvania to restore extraordinary medieval frescoes in a fortified church.

But their work goes beyond preserving a piece of art: They are also helping to save the historical building from decay.

Starting in the Middle Ages, Transylvania’s fortified churches were built mainly by German-speaking Saxon communities. They served as both places of worship and refuges during raids.

Today, they are an important part of Romania’s cultural heritage, reflecting the history of the German minority, whose numbers have declined significantly in recent decades.
