Over half a million people are estimated to have taken to the streets in France on Saturday, with more than a thousand arrested. The demonstrations spread through cities across the country and quickly turned violent, with looting and buildings set on fire.
In Limoges, central France, the city hall was set on fire, gutting the 19th-century building and collapsing the roof. Police were on the streets in large numbers throughout the country and deployed tear gas and water cannon against protesters. DW spoke with journalist Catherine Field in Paris.
