A raft of spectacular installations, including moon lanterns, lotus blossoms, and culinary motifs, transforms Hong Kong’s Victoria Park into a colorful sea of lights.

Sparkling lights and imaginative lanterns delight visitors from all over the world at Victoria Park in Hong Kong. To celebrate the annual Moon Festival, the centrally located park was transformed into a fairytale-like, luminous setting, featuring more than 3,000 lanterns in a wide variety of shapes and designs.

Egg tarts and milk tea are among the most popular themes of this spectacular festival of lights. Many of the elaborate lanterns pay tribute to Hong Kong’s culinary culture and depict regional specialties in colorful installations. In addition, numerous themes draw on traditional festive customs from around the world.

One of the festival’s highlights is an eight-meter-tall (26 feet), tree-shaped lantern from Nanjing, the capital of eastern China’s Jiangsu Province. Making its debut in Hong Kong, the lantern is among the standout attractions of the light festival. Its canopy is made up of layers of soft yellow and pale purple lanterns, while flowing ribbons of light wrap around and illuminate the trunk.

In one section, visitors stroll through the colorful glow of numerous lanterns. For the first time, the Hong Kong Moon Festival (also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival) is showcasing light art from around the world. Lights from 20 countries highlight the diverse cultural traditions and rich history of the lantern. Among them are light installations from Thailand, India, Brazil, and France.

In many parts of Asia, families and friends celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival in the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. The full moon is considered particularly round and bright during this time. People come together in a festive atmosphere to enjoy mooncakes and strengthen their bonds with family and friends.

Amid glowing lotus plants, a large moon lantern shimmers in a water basin. The installation “Moonlit Lotus” is another attraction in the Sea of Lights. Visitor interest in the lantern festival is so high that it has been extended through October 4.
