Germany is famous for its bread culture, with more than 3,000 varieties and UNESCO recognition as intangible cultural heritage. But behind bakery shelves lies a growing challenge: bread waste. In Berlin, bakeries such as Zeit für Brot (Time for Bread) work with food rescue groups to redistribute unsold bread and pastries, while apps like Too Good To Go connect discounted surplus food with consumers.
Yet experts say these efforts can only save part of the excess. German households throw away nearly 10 kilograms of bread and baked goods per person each year. Some leftover bread is turned into biogas, but bakery managers argue prevention is key. From smarter production planning to better storage at home, reducing waste before it occurs could have a greater impact than rescuing unsold products.
