Indian authorities crack down on ‘Cockroach’ protest

Delhi has been placed under tight security as authorities moved to stop a major “Cockroach” movement protest. Roads were blocked, transport disrupted and protest leaders detained before thousands could gather.

Indian authorities launched an extraordinary security operation in Delhi on Saturday to prevent a major demonstration by the so-called “Cockroach” movement. Roads across India‘s capital were sealed, police checkpoints established and public transport heavily disrupted before demonstrators could gather.

According to participants and observers, protest leaders were detained before reaching the protest site, including several who were stopped aboard aircraft before they could leave the airport.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which grew out of youth protests earlier this year, has said controversial voter roll revisions are disenfranchising citizens and undermining democracy — claims the government rejects. The standoff is becoming a major political test for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and comes ahead of a key electoral year.
